College Recruiters Flock to SFIC Basketball Festival
The Eighth Annual Scholarship Fund for Inner City Children Basketball Festival was successful in many regards: fundraising,
great matchups, and media coverage, but one of the most notable accomplishments was the presence of college coaches from major
programs all over the country.
The collection of eight top New Jersey boys teams at Kean University, including St. Patrick
and St. Anthony, attracted recruiters from over 20 universities. The local schools were represented by Kevin Willard and
Shaheen Holloway from Seton Hall, Mike Rice from Rutgers, John Morton from Fordham, Marcus Toney-El of FDU, Phil Martelli
from St. Joseph’s, Kevin Murphy from Monmouth, and others.
The national contingent included John Thompson, III and Mike
Brennan from Georgetown and assistants from Kentucky, Virginia Tech, Stanford, Syracuse, Texas, Richmond, High Point,
Felician, Kean, C.W. Post, and others. Former area head coaches Fred Hill and Brian Nash were also on-hand to look at dozens
of future college stars.
